Picket Fence Brand Babe for the Month of October

Hello my beauts, Alyssa here! So if there is one thing you beauts should know about me is I absolutely love fashion and when I started my blogging channel, I did not really think I would be modelling and reviewing fashion products whatsoever. It’s not that I think I have a bad fashion sense, I  don’t . I look at other people and think, “wow I wish I had a fashion sense like they do”. One day I randomly just thought to expand my blogging channel and thought what the heck, I’ll just try modelling and see if I like it because I always wanted to model clothing. Sure I am not a size 0 whatsoever, I don’t think I have ever been a size zero in my life but hey that’s quite alright. I was absolutely hooked on my first session and literally got my 14-year-old sisters to take pictures of me. Sometimes if I am lucky, I will book a photography session like I have had in the past, but we don’t always have the time for that!  My goal is to eventually save up for a legit pro camera so I can take my own photographs. So anywho, enough about my background with photography and how I got into modelling clothes, just wanted to share a bit of insight with you beauts! So I recently came across a beautiful boutique page a while back called, “PicketFenceBoutique”, and was really hooked on her content on her page, it was beautiful pieces of clothing that I would personally wear and model for sure. I love off the shoulder tops, tops with cutouts, tops that are distressed, and so forth. I had seen that Stacey, the owner of Picket Fence Boutique from Windsor Ontario, was hosting a contest for her company. She was hosting her first ever brand babe search for the month of October. Basically, the qualifications were as followed:

  1. You must have a love for fun trendy clothes and an eye for styling trendy pieces together.
  2. You must be active on social media ( you post several times a week or more) and have a public account.
  3. You take great photos with good lighting – natural/ clean backgrounds or scenic outdoor shots. You don’t have to be a professional photographer but the more eye-catching your photos are the better.
  4. You’re willing to work with us for a one month period, promoting our clothes and our shop by tagging us on your social media account 1-2x  a week in exchange for clothes we provide. You will also receive a 30% brand rep discount for any purchases you wish to make with us.

How to enter:

  1. Follow and like this post
  2. Repost/share this post
  3. Tag us in at least 3 photos that show YOU and your fun style, using the hashtag “picketfencebrandbabe”

So… I did just that! I went searching for my Instagram pictures, found 3 that stood out to me and hastagged away! Then the waiting game began. I started getting more anxious when other individuals were entering and joining the contest as well!  When September 29th, 2017 came my heart was beating so fast! I knew at some point today the winner would be chosen so I was patiently waiting!

As soon as I saw my name beauts my heart sank, I literally could not believe it! I am literally one of those people who always  enters contests but never win ever… like literally ever! So this one time someone was looking down on me! Right away I had messaged Stacey over email saying how excited I was to be working with her wonderful company.  I then was waiting patiently for my package to arrive in the mail with what I thought would be one shirt which I was so excited for! So I open the mailbox and it’s this huge package! I got even more excited. I opened up the package and was greeted by a beautiful sweet letter congratulating me! How adorable, I am for sure keeping the letter as a keepsake!

So me being me, I was honestly super stoked about the letter, love personalized letters, I just sat there admiring it! I then was greeted to a beautifully put together package. Beauts, this has got to be the most gorgeous packaged package I ever received in my life, I was blown away. It was wrapped in pink tissue and held together but cute little “Oh Happy Day” stickers, I was in awe.  I didn’t want to ruin the packaging but was so anxious to see what was inside the package! I was so overwhelmed I almost cried beauts. There was not one gorgeous shirt but 4….4!!! Like how generous can you be, thank you so so so much Stacey! It’s like Stacey even knew that one of my all-time favourite fall colours was olive green, which goes so well with my hazel eyes and makes them pop!

About the Company

The Picket Fence Boutique carries apparel and accessories that are modern and trendy for today’s stylish woman. The Picket Fence Brand has been in existence since 2012 as it originated with homemade wood signs under The Shabby Picket Fence name and has now grown to include boutique items including apparel and accessories.

Three, two , one …. let’s do this !

I absolutely love this shirt beauts! It’s honestly my absolute favourite out of the four tops I received. This top looks wonderful for the fall time , it’s so colourful and is absolutely gorgeous! This beautiful shirt is called ” the floral cold shoulder criss cross tied neck bell sleeve blouse”, which retails for $38.99. I honestly love the way this shirt looks on, it’s so flawless and a must have in your fall wardrobe! This shirt is flowy and lightweight, and is 100% polyester. I love the cutous on the shoulders, Stacey knew exactly my style and I love her for that! I simply paired this look with a pair of blue tight jeans, some nude heels, and a cute flowy hat.

This next top that was in my package is absolutely gorgeous. I love the distressed look, I feel like you can work this look however you wish making it classy or streetwear. I paired this look with a beanie, ripped jeans and my Hunter Boots. I think this look came together quite nicely. I received this shirt in a beautiful olive green colour which is such a statement for the fall time. This shirt comes in the colours olive green, white and heather grey.  This shirt retails for $32.99 but is on sale in the shop right now for $19.99, this is a huge steal for sure! This “distressed terry tunic sweater” is absolutely flawless and it’s one of my top favourites that’s for sure, I love anything distressed, thanks Stacey!

This next shirt in my package is super comfortable, soft and not to mention stylish. I absolutely adore it. It is in the shade olive green and is a hoodie with cutouts on the shoulders… how cool is that!? I absolutely love shoulder cutouts, and I think they make a huge statement and are great fall pieces to have in your wardrobe. This “long sleeve open shoulder tunic hoodie” retails for $41.99, but is on sale right now for $31.99.  I again love the olive green colour and think it really does look flattering on absolutely everyone. Literally best way to describe this fashion piece is sexy meets comfort. I simply paired this look with blue tight jeans, a white blanket scarf and a pair of grey converse to keep is classy get simple.

I absolutely love the fourth and final top that I received in my package. This is a gorgeous black blouse with a sexy chain back detail. One of the reasons why I love this top so much is the detail on the back. I absolutely love showing my back tattoo off any opportunity I get, and this just really compliments it so much! This top retails for $32.00 but is on sale in the sop for $19.99 which is quite the steal! I absolutely love classy tops that I can wear for dates, going out, or even evening plans later on in the day. I simply paired this look with black heels, some pink ripped jeans and a flowy black hat. I think you can create so many beautiful looks with this top which is what I adore about it. I am for sure showing this off on my next date! Hands down!

I want to take the time to personally thank Stacey and the Picket Fence Boutique for choosing me to represent and be their brand babe for the month of October. My Collaboration with “Tye Clothing”

My Collaboration with “Tye Clothing”

Hello my beauts, I hope you are all doing swell and fine!  I hope you all are having a fabulous weekend so far like myself! I had the absolute pleasure of collaborating and working with a clothing company called, “Tye Clothing Co“. Tye Clothing is a small Indie clothing label focusing on simple yet stunning designs. Tye Clothing was established in 2012, and they have had a successful couple of years creating and selling a range of clothing and accessories, from tie-dye shirts, beanies, pocket tees, and jumpers.  Tye Clothing has moved on a bit since then, and they recently relaunched in August 2017, selling their famous graphic tees.  Their focus is on quality, they do it because they love what they do.

You can order their clothing from the main store which is located in the link within their bio on Instagram which is “tyeclothingco“. The company accepts all major credit/debit, Apple Pay and PayPal. Orders are dispatched within 48 hours, and your order should be with you within 5 business days (UK Mainland), and up to 25 business days for international orders. In regards to refunds and returns, the faculty is happy to send you a replacement or refund you.

There are two main graphic t-shirts on their website right now, and they are currently working on more products. The famous shirt is the “Timepiece Tee” which retails for $10.00 which is amazing, and I absolutely love this shirt. I love the design of this t-shirt, it is so simple yet classy which is perfect. You can literally wear this with a pair of ripped jeans, normal jeans or leggings, it really is universal. Their second graphic t-shirt is their “Edition Tee“, which retails for $15.00 and this is rather stunning as well, and it is coming soon to the shop.

This company was extremely welcoming and so pleasurable to talk to.  They actually asked me if I would be interested in representing Tye Clothing, and of course, in a heartbeat, I said absolutely yes. I was more than thrilled and flattered to have been given this opportunity and really love the company as a first impression. I can not wait to see where this journey takes me and I can not wait to represent Tye Clothing. I want to take the time to personally thank Tye Clothing for allowing me to collaborate with them and represent their company, it is an honour. “Behind the Camera” with Jy Quinn Sage

“Behind the Camera” with Jy Quinn Sage

Processed with MOLDIV
Hello, my beauts and happy Thursday! I hope you all are having a wonderful day so far this early morning !(kind of hard to tell when it’s so early but come on guys lets be positive here!).  Okay okay so hands up if you want to get into modelling? “Me me oh pick me” ( donkey from shrek), no literally though I honestly wanted to get into modelling for so long now! I have always loved being in front of the camera and just posing & doing my thing. I have the absolute pleasure of knowing a Vogue Model… yup you heard me! I am super excited to let you guys know that I will be collaborating with the beautiful model Jy Quinn Sage from Six Nations. I am super stoked that Jy agreed to collab with me on this post based on her modelling experience, shall we begin?

I have had the pleasure of going to school with Jy for grade 12 I believe but we never actually spoke to one another, more or less because I was a hermit… but that’s another story! I have always admired Jy’s modelling photographs on her Instagram page and ever since I started my collaborations, I wanted to eventually reach out to her. Jy is 23 years old from her hometown of Six Nations. Modelling to Jy is a hobby of hers and how she actually got into it is rather interesting! Jy states, “When I first started to model I was 16. I won a contest that my Auntie and Grandma submitted me for. I had won free classes and a year contract with the local agency on six nations. After my year contract was up I took some time off and just volunteered my time with local fashion shows. I modelled for a designer, who has changed my modelling career for the best! she started using me for more fashion show and print work. Just two and a half years ago I got scouted out by vogue at the super crawl fashion show downtown hamilton. the owner asked me to come in and meet with them and go over a few things if I was interested”.  Wow, Jy! I am so proud of you, that’s honestly amazing! I am so happy they submitted your photograph. You literally never know what can happen it is about taking that risk and taking chances, look where it got Jy!  She is on a roll!

I then jumped right into the collaboration asking Jy about what type of modelling she is involved with and what agency she models for. Jy shares, ”  the agency I model with currently is Vogue Models & Talent (Hamilton & Toronto) The type of modelling I’m involved with is runway, print work, video and promo”.

How much time does modelling consume out of your life? “Modelling is like a part time job. You can pick and choose what jobs you’re available for, however, the more I book the more time I have to take off my everyday life to do the jobs. So worth it though!” I would think it’s worth it too Jy that’s for sure! Let’s switch hobbies for a day, you can blog and I’ll model sound good?! I love how modelling is somewhat flexible for you Jy, that is so convenient.

I was so curious about this next question! I always wondered if models can keep their clothing after the shoot that they do. Jy explains, “no you don’t keep the clothes, sometimes the clothes that you are modelling are worth thousands. I find when I do a promotional job where there is a dress requirement you can get reimbursed any money you had to spend” I find that so interesting! That is insane how much some of the clothes are worth! Oh my goodness, that is crazy!. I would be so hesitant not to rip anything or break something I am wearing. That is good that you get reimbursed though!

Do you enjoy modelling? What are the pros and cons of it? “I love modelling!!! the best part about modelling is the experiences. Each job is different and you get to meet a lot of new people 🙂 One of the cons about the job is all the waiting you do for a fashion show. Hair and makeup only take a couple of hours but because there is so many other girls getting theirs done too it takes up to 5-8 hours”. I would absolutely adore modelling, I think the experience would be unreal and amazing like Jy said! I never even thought about the waiting aspect of modelling, to be honest, but that is something that has to be taken into consideration. I guess you must be a very patient person in order to succeed in this industry. I would not mind getting my hair and makeup done, however, that would be the life!

I then went on the ask Jy what her favourite shoot was so far! Jy states, “my most favourite shoot I’ve done so far was done for Angela DeMontingty. It was a last minute shoot and the photos turned out amazing!!”.  I absolutely love these photographs. They are breathtakingly gorgeous and Jy makes it look so easy and simple, I love it. You can say she is very natural at it that is for sure!

Do you have a restrictive diet? ” No, I don’t have a restrictive diet. I try to workout three times a week and eat kinda healthy”.

I know we are all dying to know how one gets involved and started in modelling right? Well have no fear, Jy is here to give us all the crucial information needed! Jy explains, “. to get started in modelling, you should try and find a local agency near you. Contact them and have them look at you to see if you have the look that they need. Sometimes you get turned down but that’s ok, keep calling and researching places”. Like Jy said, in order to be a a model you have to have that positive and upbeat attitude, a thick skin to say the least. I don’t know how I would initially be if I got turned down. I do not have thick skin to begin with, so not taking it personally would be hard at the beginning for me. On the other hand, you never know! Th ageny may want to look into you a bit more which would be amazing! Thanks for the advice Jy!

I also wanted to ask Jy a more personal question in regards to modelling. I was curious to find out if models make a fair amount of money for their shoots. Jy states, “yes you can make good money modelling. It all depends on how long the job is, what you’re doing and how well known they are. For example, if you get asked by a company just starting out they may just ask for volunteers, always volunteer!!Extremely important when it comes to modelling, this is how you put your foot in the door and meet new people who will potentially wanna book you for future jobs”. Great tip and advice Jy! That is so important, to get yourself out there and get yourself known as well. A lot of people love volunteers and I can see why agencies would jump on this!

“Patience is a huge key in modelling, it takes time.”

Are there certain requirements to become a model? Ex. Height, size etc…“Some agencies do have certain requirements.  The agency I’m with likes a variety of heights and sizes. Yes, this does affect your chances for some jobs but there is always something to be submitted for”.

Have you met any celebrities at any of your events?“I have not met any celebrities yet! However, I’m going to be modelling on Dragon Den this April 20th :)” No way Jy! That is honestly incredible, I will for sure be scouting you guys on and looking out for you! I am sure all my viewers and beauts will be looking out for you too and cheering you guys on! Goodluck!

I was curious to know what other activities Jy did aside from modelling as her hobby. Jy explains, “Besides modelling, I enjoy doing art. I like to draw and paint on my down time to relax :)”. I remember having art class with Jy back in high school and I have to say she is quite talented in that department as well! Jeeze Jy, can you share some of that talent with me too?

Lastly, I asked Jy if she had any words of advice in regards to modelling in general. Jy shares, “one piece advice I would give about modelling is to not take things personally!! Sometimes the customer is just looking for a particular look”.  I would for sure be that random person that starts crying after constructive criticism, who is with me on that one? Haha! Good or you Jy, I am so proud of where you have gotten yourself, that’s incredible. I want to give a huge thank you to Jy Quinn Sage for agreeing to collaborate with me on this blog post based on her modelling experiences. I really enjoyed getting to know her on a more personal note, as well as being more informed about modelling and the industry. Be sure to check out her Instagram page for more pictures and images of her modelling!

“The Blonde Closet” featuring Melissa Ashburn

“The Blonde Closet” featuring Melissa Ashburn

Hey beauts, I hope you are all having a very relaxing Sunday so far! My dog woke me up around 7 today which was just lovely. So I thought, well why not work on a blog post if I can’t go back to bed!  So we have the makeup down pat for spring as there are so many beautiful looks we can create, but what about spring fashion, let alone fashion in general? I have always loved looking my best whenever I go out anywhere. Would I say that I have the best fashion in the world… probably not. I always look up on Pinterest different outfit ideas for whatever event it may be, and it always seems to be on par. There is, however, one individual whose fashion sense is always right on point, that would be the gorgeous Melissa Ashburn. I know Melissa and have met Melissa before through my cousin, and she is honestly such a sweet girl. One of the first things that stood out to me about her was indeed her fashion. You know how certain things become second nature to us? That was exactly how I felt and I was so jealous how someone can look so good all the time! I had the amazing opportunity to do a collaboration with Melissa Ashburn on her journey through her blogging site, modelling experience, and strong passion towards fashion!

Some of you guys may know Melissa as “theblondecloset“, where she posts all her daily fashion blogs and keeps us up to date with the latest trends. Melissa is a 24-year-old fashion and beauty blogger. She has been blogging since April 2014 and states, “the first two years of my blog were kept very quiet. I never really told anyone about (including most of my friends) until last year”.  I began right away asking Melissa what had inspired her to create , “theblondecloset”. Melissa explains, “for me, it played back to my modelling days a lot. My favourite part about modelling was being in front of the camera on photo shoots, but unfortunately, because of my height (I’m extremely tall) I got booked for mostly runway – which I hated. So I wanted to create a place where I could be in front of the camera as much as I wanted and because I was so into fashion I thought I had a purpose to do so. I worked at a clothing store at the time and I saw how so many women struggled with putting full outfits together, and always asked for help. So I figured if I can help them in person, why couldn’t I do the same online? And that’s how it all started!”. That is so interesting! For sure I believe Melissa was driven towards creating her own blog and I love how her height didn’t stop her. Not being able to do something you want to do often brings people down, but in this case, it geared her towards another successful direction and path.  Discussing her blog, Melissa blogs three days a week, Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. So be sure to expect a new blog coming shortly!

Often I find it helps when you are following certain people on social media who inspire you and help you think of ideas for your blogs. Melissa states, “I’m obsessed with Caitlyn Covington and Emily Ann Gemma, their styles are very similar to my own so I tend to love everything they wear”.  Following this discussion, I was extremely excited to actually get into the topic of Fashion. I know I have a lot to learn, so the more help the better, thank goodness for Melissa!

When did you first develop an interest towards fashion? “I have always had a love for fashion, when I was a kid I would cut up the old clothes that I was bored of and make them into other things. I turned jeans into purses, and t-shirts into shrugs… I would even embroider beads onto my “designs” all by hand!” WOW! I wish I was that talented to do that! I probably still could not even do that at this age! I am literally so mind blown that a child could think of this, leave it up to Melissa!

Has working at a clothing store influenced your fashion sense and inspiration for your blogs? “It has definitely influenced my fashion sense, but I think more so when I first started 5 years ago(I was 19) than now. The store I work at is a little more elevated so my style definitely matured a lot faster than other people my age, at the time”.

I was also highly interested in what Melissa’s favourite go-to outfit for day time and night time looks were. Melissa explains, ” my favourite go-to outfit would have to be my high-waist dark wash denim, a drapey tee and a leather jacket. At night I would just swap out the tee for a silk cami and throw on some red lipstick and I’m good to go!” You can’t go wrong with that! I love how simple and easy it is to just switch certain articles of clothing depending on if it is a daytime or nighttime look.

Piece of advice you would give someone just starting out with fashion? “The three piece rule! In order for any outfit to look put together, it must have three pieces. For example,  your pants are one piece, your shirt is one piece and then you need to add either a jacket/blazer as your third piece OR it can be a bold accessory (dainty accessories don’t count). So a scarf, belt or statement necklace could also act as your third piece to complete the outfit”.

Now beauts, we are going to be moving on to the topic of modelling. I have known that Melissa was involved in modelling, but did not know the ins and outs of it. I thought it would be neat to ask her a few questions in regards to her modelling. Melissa has been modelling for 4 years now, but unfortunately decided this was not the route for her. Melissa explains, “it depends on the person but for me, there were some major cons that outweighed the pros when it came to modelling. Models don’t get paid for 3 months after completing jobs, and the jobs aren’t consistent so I needed to have a part-time job (working retail) in order to have a steady paycheck. However, agents don’t like when you have another job because then you can’t be as flexible with your time, and I never heard the end of it”. Oh jeez, I never really knew that but it is good to know! I can see your frustration in that Melissa, as I would be very frustrated too. That would be extremely hard to keep a steady paycheck only relying on modelling at the time. Although there are some cons when it comes to modelling, there are always some pros. Melissa states, “the pros from me was photoshoot days, and the awesome people you get to meet. Being a fashion lover it was amazing seeing the behind the scenes of fashion shows, and highend events. Also, having my hair and makeup done all the time wasn’t so bad either!”. I would honestly not mind my hair and makeup being done, I would be in absolute heaven that is for sure. It’s interesting because I always saw the pros of modelling and considered them, but never really thought about the cons. It is always nice to have that insight on these things.

What type of modelling did you do? “Runway, editorial, commercial, and events”.

I was very curious to know how Melissa go involved with modelling, I mean, who doesn’t want to know that! Melissa shares, “my whole life I was told by my family, friends, and may strangers (lol!) that I should be a model because of my height. And I was so in love with fashion that I thought it would be a step in the right direction for my hopeful career in the fashion industry”.

Have you guys ever wondered what models are allowed to eat or if they have a restrictive diet? I thought this would be beneficial to ask Melissa if she was put on a diet and so forth. Melissa states, “I was, but at the time it wasn’t so much of a diet as it was a lifestyle. I ate clean and worked out almost every day, and because of that my body just stopped craving all the bad foods, so I wasn’t really ever tempted by them”.  I can see this happening for sure. I heard this a lot of times that sometimes you stop craving bad foods when you are so used to not having them. This goes the same way for me when it comes to pop. I used to drink pop every single day, and now since not having it for a long time, I do not crave it anymore. So interesting how that works!

How much time did this consume out of your day? week? “Modelling consumed a lot of time but mostly because all of my jobs and castings were an hour away from where I lived. So a quick 10-minute casting ended up taking me 2 hours and 10 minutes, and you don’t get paid for that!”. I can only imagine how much time modelling is, and I am not even a model. Wow, you do not even get paid? That’s crazy! You got to do what you got to do sometimes, and that is just what Melissa did.

When I had reached out to Melissa, I thought that she was still involved in modelling, but I was unaware that she had quit. I was curious to find out what had happened and what made her change her mind about modelling. Melissa explains, “I quit modelling because it got to a point where I needed to decide if I was willing to move to Toronto and take it serious, or just quit. The commuting was taking up too much of my time on top of everything else. I ultimately decided I would quit since I didn’t enjoy doing runway, and that’s what I was getting booked for the most. I then started my blog to incorporate everything I loved about editorial modelling and my love for fashion into one passion project!” You have to do what is best for yourselves, and I am very proud of Melissa for taking the time to notice that she was unhappy. You have to listen to your mind and body. Although Melissa quit modelling, she has numerous year of experience that she was involved in which is amazing and admiring!

Best piece of advice someone has given you in regards to fashion/modelling/blogging? “My best piece of advice for modelling would be to take a course before you get into it for the first time. I gained so much self-confidence just from taking a course, that people in my life noticed a drastic change in me after I graduated it. I built some really great friendships and learned some amazing things that I will take with me through life even without modelling”.

I want to personally thank Melissa Ashburn for taking the time out of her day to collaborate with me and answer these questions I was curious about. I found this blog rather fascinating and extremely informative in regards to the fashion industry. There are a lot of pointers that Melissa shared in which I am going to take note of! Thanks for the collaboration Melissa! I highly recommend you beauts checking out her blogging channel which is “theblondecloset”. Her blog is amazing, her photographs are phenom, and her outfits are gorgeous! You don’t want to miss out! You can also follow her Instagram page at : Melissaashburn
